A check-up can find health problems before they start or early enough for successful treatment. Acibadem offers personalized check-up packages for your health.
A health check-up is a kind of medical screening for healthy individuals. It involves medical tests, physical examinations, and health risk assessment. Its goal is to evaluate your general state of health and identify potential health issues. Based on your results, your doctor will recommend lifestyle changes and other measures to keep you in good health.
Nobody wants to see a doctor or visit a hospital when feeling healthy. And yet, a check-up can spare you a lot of future doctor visits. Just like a dental check-up can prevent the need for long and complex teeth treatment, routine medical check-ups are made to find problems before they start or early enough to be fast treated. Medical assessment based on your health condition, lifestyle, and family history can help identify potential future health risks. High cholesterol levels, for example, may lead to cardiovascular problems. A full-body health check-up may also detect a “silent” chronic condition, like diabetes or high blood pressure. Early diagnosis allows you to keep chronic conditions under control and avoid further deterioration of your general health. Last but not least, some simple tests can help detect serious diseases early, when their treatment is mostly successful. This is the case with the Pap smear and cervical cancer. That is why a comprehensive physical exam performed regularly is an important tool for preventing serious illnesses.
Our individual health risks depend on specific factors, including age, gender, environment, genotype and family predispositions, lifestyle choices, and many more. Therefore, the components included in our medical check-up will vary from person to person, and they will even vary for the same individual over time. As a general rule, the evaluation packages become larger with ageing: people over 40 should undergo a more detailed health assessment than those in their 20s. However, a typical check-up program includes:
Depending on the information obtained, the doctor may recommend additional medical tests and exams, such as cardiac and lung function tests, bone density screening, mammography, colon or prostate cancer screenings, eye exam, skin examination, etc. A routine health assessment may include a head-to-toe complete check-up and specific screening for particular diseases.
Every adult is recommended to get a medical check-up once a year, even without any complaints or symptoms. That is why it is also called an annual physical examination. However, for some young and healthy individuals who have no family history of diseases, it may be sufficient to have it once every two or three years. A reasonable approach would be to discuss with your check-up doctor when should be your next visit.
A routine check-up usually starts with a discussion with your doctor on your medical history, medications used, family predispositions, lifestyle, nutrition, and habits that might affect your health. These help your doctor understand which health risks you are likely to face and determine the scope of tests and examinations you will need. After completing all tests and screenings, you will have a follow-up review of the results with the physician. At ACIBADEM, our experienced check-up doctors can answer all your questions and draft your personal wellness plan. A medical check-up is a one-day service, it does not take a long time, and this time is an investment in your future health.
To make the most of your health check, write down all your questions and concerns you would like to discuss with your doctor. Review the medical history of your family and take your previous test results to ensure you will not miss important details.
You are recommended to arrive on an empty stomach for the arrangement. Fasting for 8-10 hours will be needed, sometimes 12-14 hours for specific blood tests. Drinking plain water is allowed, but sweets, caffeine intake, and smoking are disallowed. You should stop alcohol intake 24 hours before the examination and have a light meal for the latest dinner. It is not recommended to consume foods such as red meat, beetroot, spinach, and broccoli two days before your appointment. If your check-up program includes abdominal screening, you should have a full bladder. For female patients, mammography is recommended during the 3rd-10th day of the menstrual cycle. Before the mammogram screening, no shower, body gel, or cream use is recommended. You will be instructed to stop the usage of medications in certain cases.
