What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis or “chocolate cyst” is a painful disorder in which the tissue similar to the inner walls of the uterus or “endometrium” grows out of the uterus. Endometriosis affects the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and the lines of the pelvis. As it thickens and bleeds, the disorder causes several symptoms, decreasing the life quality of the patient. One out of 10 women having a menstrual cycle suffers from endometriosis.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

The symptoms of endometriosis vary:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Severe pain during the menstrual cycle and sexual intercourse
  • Pain during urination
  • Disorders regarding bowel movements
  • Infertility
  • Severe bleeding
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Nausea during menstruation

Endometriosis causes loss of health-life balance for women, as those severe or chronic symptoms affect their daily activities, sexual relationships, and life consent. However, these symptoms may not occur at all making the diagnosis of endometriosis impossible. As a result, an ultrasound or another diagnostic tool is required to diagnose the disease.

Diagnosis of Endometriosis

Endometriosis symptoms are similar to other gynecological problems. Accurate diagnosis of endometriosis requires specialized knowledge and experience such as physical examination and imaging. When endometriosis cannot be diagnosed, and therefore remains untreated or mistreated, it may lead to other pelvic disorders and even infertility. Early diagnosis by an experienced gynecologist and obstetrician specialized on endometriosis and endometrial cyst surgery saves time and energy for the patient, increasing their trust in the treatment.

Surgical Treatment of Endometriosis

Surgical treatment for endometriosis may be planned when symptoms are severe and/or a medical treatment turns out inadequate. Surgery is the preferred treatment method when there is an anatomical deterioration in the pelvic organs or obstruction of the intestinal and urinary tracts. Generally, the conservative method in which the uterus and ovarian tissue are preserved (surgical removal of only endometrial tissue) is more preferable. The surgery is performed with laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery.

The most important point in endometriosis surgery is the surgeon’s extensive knowledge and deep experience for a successful outcome. Performing this operation by an inexperienced physician could be concluded in a high complication rate during the operation (bleeding, vascular injury, urinary tract, bowel injury, and fistula) and recurrence of the disease in the early postoperative period. This can also be due to an incomplete surgery. With a successful surgery, a spontaneous pregnancy, a pain-free life, and a low recurrence rate is obtainable.
