Comprehensive Spine Center

Acibadem Comprehensive Spine Center provides holistic services beyond traditional approaches in spine care.

What is a Spine Center?

Spine centers are medical establishments providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment in a single location. Acibadem Comprehensive Spine Center in Turkiye incorporates the expertise of world-class specialists in orthopedics, spine surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, anesthesiology, physiotherapy and algology, dealing with common and complex spinal disorders. All of them have a deep knowledge to understand spine conditions and patients’ complaints well. They have the experience to determine appropriate diagnosis and treatment alternatives for a patient, and the technology to execute the treatment in the best way possible.

Spine Diseases We Treat

Acibadem Comprehensive Spine Center offers its high-end expertise in the treatment of the full scope of spinal conditions, ranging from common spine disorders to the most complex cases. These include:

  • Spinal deformities in children and adults: Scoliosis (sideways curvature of the spine), hyperkyphosis (when the upper back curves abnormally forward), hyperlordosis (the lower back curves significantly inwards).
  • Degenerative spine conditions: This large group of disorders is the leading cause of back pain. Among them are herniated discs caused by injury or age-related wear and tear; spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal); sciatica (compressed or irritated sciatic nerve); degenerative disc disease (thinning of vertebral discs); spondylolisthesis (a vertebra slips out of place); radiculopathy (pinched nerve roots), etc.
  • Spinal tumors: Could be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant; primary (originating from the spine or the spinal cord) or metastatic (when cancer from another site spreads to the spine).
  • Spinal injuries and fractures: Might be caused by accidents, sports traumas, or other conditions weakening the vertebrae.
  • Spinal infections: Usually caused by bacteria or fungi.

Advanced Diagnostics of Spinal Disorders

At Acibadem Comprehensive Spine Center, we use the latest diagnostic tools to ensure appropriate treatment solutions.

Our expert team can make use of the EOS imaging system with reduced radiation exposure, the Siemens Somatom CT device with ultra-low radiation dose, and the DIERS formetric 4D device for radiation-free surface scanning, used in the follow-up of scoliosis patients and eliminating the need for frequent radiographs. Siemens Magnetom 1.5T Avanto Fit and Siemens Magnetom 3T Skyra MRI devices are used to diagnose spinal diseases.

Posture disorders are detected with DIERS 4D Motion Lab for the analysis of posture and gait disorders and DIERS Myoline for evaluation of muscle strength, reducing the usage of radiation-emitting imaging devices.

Nonsurgical Spine Treatments

Nonsurgical options for spinal disorders may include exercise to increase muscle strength and flexibility, braces, or medication. At Acibadem Comprehensive Spine Center, we can offer:

  • Spinal bracing: In this unit, dynamic braces that provide 3D correction are designed, produced, and applied by orthotists who are experts in their fields, under the supervision of doctors who have received special training.
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation: Our Physical Therapy Unit specializes in physiotherapy for scoliosis, pain management, and individual training programs for our patients. Scoliosis-specific exercises, Reformer Combo Pilates, TRX, BOSU, and wing yoga are practiced by trained and certified physiotherapists in these fields.
  • Posture Check-up: Spinal curvatures, posture, and gait are evaluated using the DIERS 4D device, which performs surface topography and posture analysis without radiation exposure. DIERS Myoline measures the strength of 28 different posture muscles and gives information about their condition. Posture is corrected with exercises planned in this direction.
  • Pain management: For patients with back pain, various treatments are performed by algologists to relieve the pain. Spine injections, electrotherapy, hot and cold applications, and appropriate physical medicine methods are selected specifically for the patient.

Having all these units in the same center allows for a holistic treatment process and enhanced outcomes.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

When spine surgery is required, we prefer minimally invasive techniques when possible. They make smaller incisions and cause less bleeding and trauma to muscles and tissues. It helps to minimize postoperative complications and fasten the recovery period. Minimally invasive spine operation can be applied for discectomy (herniated disc surgery), nerve decompression, spinal fusion, and generally, in most cases that need spine surgery.

This type of surgery requires specific equipment. At Acibadem Comprehensive Spine Center, our surgeons use a specially developed microscope for spine surgeries Zeiss Tivato 700. Karl Storz & Ethicon devices are used to enable minimally invasive spine surgery with video-thoracoscopy. Safe and secure placement of screws and other tools is ensured by the Medtronic O-arm imaging device and Stealth Station navigation system.

For complicated spinal deformities, we use 3D printing technology to produce a real-size spine model and plan the treatment.

Advanced Scoliosis Surgery

The gold standard for severe scoliosis treatment is spinal fusion surgery. It works by fusing together two or more vertebrae in a solid bone to correct the curve. A novel and highly advanced procedure in this field is Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT). It is a minimally invasive technique performed mainly in children and adolescents. Unlike traditional spinal fusion, VBT corrects the curve without impeding the spine’s flexibility or the patient’s growth. The team of Acibadem Comprehensive Spine Center has applied the new method successfully since 2014. That makes us one of the most experienced centers with VBT surgery around the world.
