A normal result at the wrong hour can falsely reassure; a high result after a rough night can falsely alarm. Clinicians use timed blood, saliva, or 24-hour urine tests chosen to answer specific questions. If symptoms genuinely suggest a hormone problem, a physician-ordered workup is more reliable.

Does deep breathing really lower cortisol?

Slow breathing reliably activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the vagus nerve, lowering heart rate and blood pressure within minutes — an effect you can feel in real time. Direct cortisol evidence is more modest: studies of breathing and mindfulness programs show small-to-moderate hormone reductions after weeks of consistent practice, with larger improvements in how stressed people feel. Try roughly six breaths per minute with longer exhales, about four seconds in and six seconds out, for five minutes.
