Editorial Policy

Learn more about how we create, review and update our health content — and our commitment to providing reliable, understandable and responsible medical information.

At Acıbadem, we believe that access to accurate health information can help people better understand their health, ask the right questions and make more informed decisions about their care.

Whether you are researching a medical condition, exploring treatment options, preparing for an appointment or simply looking for reliable health information, our goal is to provide content that is clear, evidence-based, medically reviewed and easy to understand.

Our content is intended to support — not replace — the relationship between patients and qualified healthcare professionals.

Our Voice

Healthcare can be complex. Our aim is to make it easier to understand without oversimplifying the medicine behind it. We communicate directly and clearly, using language that patients and their families can understand while maintaining medical accuracy.

Whenever possible, we explain medical terminology, procedures, technologies and treatment options in practical terms and provide the context readers need to understand what the information may mean for them. Our tone is professional, respectful and approachable.

Most importantly, we recognize that every patient is an individual. A diagnosis does not define a person, and treatment decisions should always take into account each patient's medical history, clinical findings and personal circumstances.

Our Commitment to Our Readers

Health communication carries responsibility. The words, images and information used in healthcare can influence how people perceive their condition and the decisions they make about their health. For this reason, Acıbadem International is committed to providing health information that is:

  • Medically accurate
  • Evidence-based
  • Clear and understandable
  • Respectful and inclusive
  • Transparent about limitations and uncertainty
  • Regularly reviewed and updated
  • Designed to support informed conversations between patients and healthcare professionals

We aim to use person-centered language and avoid unnecessary fear, stigma or assumptions about an individual's health, background or circumstances. Medical knowledge and terminology continue to evolve; our editorial standards therefore evolve with them.

Our Editorial Process

Health content published by Acıbadem International is developed using trusted medical sources, current scientific literature, recognized clinical guidelines and the expertise of healthcare professionals. Topics are selected from real patient questions and information needs.

Depending on the subject, our editorial process may include contributions from medical writers, editors, physicians, surgeons and other healthcare professionals with expertise in the relevant field. Where appropriate, our teams review:

  • Peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • International and national clinical guidelines
  • Medical society recommendations
  • Academic and institutional sources
  • Current diagnostic and treatment standards
  • Clinical expertise from Acıbadem physicians and multidisciplinary teams

Where medical review is required, content is reviewed for clinical accuracy by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional through our Medical Review Board before publication. Pages covered by this process display a visible "Medically reviewed" line together with the date of the approval.

If the medical content of a page changes materially after its last review, the reviewed label is withheld until the updated text has been approved again — the label and the page's update history always tell the same story. Selected treatment pages also carry signed commentary from named members of our medical team.

Our editorial team also reviews content for clarity, readability and consistency. Whenever scientific evidence is referenced, we aim to provide links or references that allow readers to understand the evidence supporting the information presented, and we distinguish, wherever appropriate, between established medical evidence, emerging treatments and areas where scientific uncertainty remains. No article reaches you on autopilot: a qualified human approves what is published.

Keeping Our Content Current

Medicine changes. New research, technologies, diagnostic methods and treatment approaches can change how certain diseases are understood or managed.

For this reason, our medical pages display Published and Last updated dates together with an expandable update history that records key events such as medical review approvals and content updates. We periodically reassess articles to determine whether medical or editorial updates are required; when meaningful new evidence becomes available, content is updated, merged or retired accordingly.

Medical Expertise and Evidence

Acıbadem is an integrated healthcare organization bringing together physicians, surgeons, nurses, allied healthcare professionals and multidisciplinary medical teams across a wide range of specialties. Our access to clinical expertise allows us to combine scientific evidence with the perspective of healthcare professionals who work directly with patients.

However, individual outcomes may vary. Statistics, clinical studies and treatment results presented on our website should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the same outcome will occur for every patient. A patient's diagnosis, treatment options and expected outcomes can only be determined after an appropriate medical evaluation.

How We Use Artificial Intelligence

Acıbadem International may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support selected parts of the editorial and creative process. AI may assist our teams with activities such as:

  • Generating ideas and content outlines
  • Supporting background research and literature organization
  • Improving readability or simplifying complex medical explanations
  • Suggesting headlines, summaries or digital content formats
  • Supporting translation and language adaptation
  • Creating or assisting with the creation of illustrative visual content

AI tools do not replace medical expertise, clinical judgment or professional editorial review. Health information developed with the support of AI is subject to the same editorial and medical review standards as other content published by Acıbadem International. Our AI Usage Policy explains this in more detail.

AI-Generated Images, Patient Privacy and Copyright

We may also use AI-generated or AI-assisted illustrations in certain articles and digital materials. One important reason for doing so is to help protect patient privacy and confidentiality: instead of using identifiable patient photographs or clinical images where they are not necessary, AI-generated illustrations allow us to visually explain a medical topic without exposing a real patient's identity or personal health information. AI-generated imagery may also be used when appropriate to reduce the risk of using third-party visual materials that could be subject to copyright or licensing restrictions.

When AI-generated images are used:

  • They are intended primarily for educational and illustrative purposes.
  • They should not be interpreted as photographs of actual Acıbadem patients unless explicitly stated otherwise.
  • We do not intentionally use identifiable patient data, photographs or confidential medical information as prompts for generative AI systems without an appropriate legal basis, authorization and applicable safeguards.
  • AI-generated medical illustrations are reviewed when necessary to reduce the risk of inaccurate, misleading or anatomically inappropriate representations.
  • AI is not used to fabricate clinical results, patient outcomes, diagnostic images or scientific evidence.

Where appropriate, we may indicate that an image has been generated or enhanced using artificial intelligence. Our use of AI is guided by the same principles that govern all of our health communication: medical accuracy, transparency, patient confidentiality, data protection and respect for intellectual property rights.

Editorial Independence and Transparency

The primary purpose of our health content is to inform and educate. Clinical information is not altered in a way that compromises medical accuracy for marketing or promotional purposes, and clinical review verdicts belong to the reviewing clinicians.

When content discusses a particular technology, treatment or service available within Acıbadem, we aim to present the medical context necessary for readers to understand its role, potential benefits and limitations. We do not present emerging or experimental approaches as established standards of care unless supported by appropriate evidence.

Sources and References

We prioritize reliable sources of medical information, including peer-reviewed scientific publications, recognized medical organizations, clinical guidelines and academic sources. Anecdote, marketing claims and single unverified studies are not treated as evidence. The quality, relevance and recency of evidence are considered when sources are selected.

Where references support important medical claims, pages include a visible References section. Sources are drawn from recognized authorities — such as the World Health Organization, the CDC, the NIH and MedlinePlus, the NHS, the National Cancer Institute, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medicine, the American Heart Association and peer-reviewed literature indexed in PubMed — and reference links are checked when they are added to a page.

Health Information Is Not a Medical Diagnosis

Information published on Acıbadem International is provided for general educational and informational purposes. It does not constitute a medical diagnosis, individual treatment recommendation or substitute for consultation with a qualified healthcare professional.

If you have symptoms, concerns about your health or questions about a treatment plan, you should discuss them with an appropriate healthcare professional. Treatment recommendations can only be made after a patient's medical history, examinations, imaging, laboratory results and other relevant clinical information have been properly evaluated.
