Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baran Cengiz Arcagök

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baran Cengiz Arcagök is a pediatrician at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Pediatrics unit. His clinical work centers on the care of newborns, with particular attention to premature infants and to the respiratory and neurological conditions that can arise in the first days and weeks of life. He has more than 20 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Arcagök graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2006. He then completed his specialty training in pediatrics at the İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Department of Child Health and Diseases in 2011, followed by training in neonatology at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, which he completed in 2014. In 2016 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services and worked at Fulya Acıbadem Hospital between 2016 and 2017. Since 2017 he has practiced at his current hospital in Altunizade, İstanbul.

Clinical focus

Dr. Arcagök’s areas of expertise are concentrated in neonatal medicine. He cares for infants born prematurely, whose organs may not yet be fully developed and who often require close monitoring of breathing, feeding, temperature and growth. Within this group, he manages respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), a condition in which immature lungs have difficulty exchanging oxygen, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung condition that can develop in some infants who have needed prolonged respiratory support. Care in these situations is adapted to each infant’s gestational age, clinical course and individual needs.

He also treats hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a form of brain injury that can occur when a newborn’s brain does not receive enough oxygen or blood flow around the time of birth. Assessment and management of HIE involve careful clinical observation and coordination with the wider care team. In addition, Dr. Arcagök uses phototherapy, a light-based treatment applied when a newborn’s bilirubin level is elevated and needs to be reduced under medical supervision. Families are informed about the reasons for treatment, what it involves and how their infant is monitored.

How Dr. Arcagök works with international patients

Dr. Arcagök speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who prefer another language. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as ultrasound, MRI or X-ray reports, laboratory results and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the infant’s medical history and current symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options with the family. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their child’s situation before deciding whether to travel.
