Dr. Ebru Özdemir

Dr. Ebru Özdemir is a general surgeon at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where she practices within the General Surgery unit. During and after her specialization she co-authored peer-reviewed publications, several of them in the field of renal transplantation, including work on cancer screening in renal transplant patients receiving long-term immunosuppressive therapy, monitoring of CD3(+) T-cell counts after antithymocyte globulin induction, C4d staining as a marker of humoral injury, and encapsulated peritoneal sclerosis as a cause of ileus. Other publications examined D-dimer and carcinoembryonic antigen levels as indicators of tumor stage and postoperative survival, and reported a case of brown tumors with a review of the literature.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Özdemir’s practice is the assessment and treatment of anorectal conditions. This includes hemorrhoid treatment, the management of anal fissure and the evaluation of other anorectal diseases. Because symptoms in this region can overlap between different conditions, her approach begins with a careful history and clinical examination before any treatment is discussed, so that the options considered are appropriate to the individual diagnosis.

Her general surgical work also covers cholecystitis, or inflammation of the gallbladder, as well as inguinal hernia and mastectomy. In each of these areas, the choice between observation, non-surgical management and an operation depends on the findings of the examination, the results of imaging and laboratory tests, and the patient’s overall health. Dr. Özdemir discusses these considerations with the patient and, where relevant, with colleagues from other units at the hospital.

How Dr. Özdemir works with international patients

Dr. Özdemir consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as ultrasound, CT or MRI reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options.
