Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emir Çapkınoğlu

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emir Çapkınoğlu is a General Surgery specialist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery and General Surgery units. His subspecialty areas are endocrine surgery, obesity surgery, robotic surgery and the treatment of hemorrhoids and anorectal diseases. His clinical work also extends to colorectal cancer, mastectomy and breast reconstruction. He has more than 17 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Çapkınoğlu graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2009. He completed his General Surgery training at İzmir Katip Çelebi University – Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 2015, and in 2018 he completed training in Surgical Oncology at Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine. He has been working within Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2021 and holds the academic title of Associate Professor.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. Çapkınoğlu’s practice is devoted to obesity treatment. He evaluates patients who are considering surgery for obesity, reviews their medical history and metabolic status, and discusses whether a surgical approach is appropriate in their situation. The bariatric procedures within his area of expertise include sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. Robotic surgery is part of his surgical practice, and the suitability of a robotic approach is considered for each patient individually rather than assumed in advance.

In the field of anorectal diseases, Dr. Çapkınoğlu assesses and treats hemorrhoids and anal fissure. He also treats colorectal cancer and performs endocrine surgery. His expertise in breast surgery includes mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Treatment decisions are made after a careful review of the diagnosis, the findings of the clinical examination and any existing imaging and pathology results. Where several options exist, he explains the possible benefits and limitations of each so that the patient can take part in the decision. Surgical treatment is proposed only when it is considered appropriate for the individual case, and non-surgical approaches are discussed where relevant.

How Dr. Çapkınoğlu works with international patients

Dr. Çapkınoğlu consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as laboratory and pathology results, ultrasound, CT or MRI reports, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options that may be considered. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case with Dr. Çapkınoğlu before deciding whether to travel, and the findings of such a consultation are confirmed at an in-person examination where surgery is being planned.
