Assoc. Prof. Emre Günay, MD

Assoc. Prof. Emre Günay, MD is a general surgeon in the General Surgery unit at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. His subspecialty areas are the treatment of hemorrhoids and anorectal diseases and endocrine surgery, and he has more than 20 years of experience in medicine. His clinical work also covers umbilical and inguinal hernias and cholecystitis.

Dr. Günay graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2006 and completed his General Surgery training at Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital in 2011. He worked there as a Specialist Physician from 2012 to 2019 and, from 2020 to 2021, as an Associate Professor Doctor and Training Officer. In 2019 he spent time at the Friedrich Alexander University Surgical and Coloproctology Clinics in Erlangen, Germany. He subsequently held positions at BHT Clinic İstanbul Tema Hospital in 2021 and at the Liv Hospital Vadi İstanbul Department of General Surgery and Kidney Transplant Center from 2021 to 2023, before joining Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023. He is a member of the Turkish Colon and Rectal Surgery Association, the Turkish Surgical Association, the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP), the International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists (IASGO), the Turkey Organ Transplant Organizations Coordination Association (TONKKD), the National Endoscopic Laparoscopic Surgery Association and the Turkish Medical Association, and he is a Fellow of American College of Surgeons (FACS). His published work includes studies on genetic factors in thrombosed hemorrhoidal disease, laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal hernia repair, complications of colonoscopic interventions, the role of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy before cholecystectomy, and the surgical approach to hepatic hydatid cysts.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Günay’s practice is the assessment and treatment of haemorrhoids and other anorectal diseases. He evaluates the patient’s symptoms and examination findings and discusses the treatment options that are appropriate for the individual case, which may include non-surgical or surgical approaches depending on the condition and its stage.

He also performs endocrine surgery and treats umbilical hernia and inguinal hernia, including laparoscopic repair techniques described in his publications. In addition, he manages patients with cholecystitis, where the decision about gallbladder surgery is made after reviewing the clinical picture, imaging and any previous treatment.

How Dr. Günay works with international patients

Dr. Günay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages.
