Filiz Yarımçan, MD

Filiz Yarımçan, MD is a Clinical Laboratory physician at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. Her work covers clinical laboratory medicine and medical microbiology, including bacteriology, virology, molecular biology, anaerobic bacteria, diagnostic microbiology and transfusion center laboratory services. She has more than 27 years in medicine and is a member of the Turkish Microbiology Society.

Dr. Yarımçan graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2002 and completed her specialty training in Medical Microbiology there in 2008. During this period she worked as a researcher in the Anaerobic Bacteria Laboratory and the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the same faculty, and in 2008 as a researcher at Paris University Faculty of Medicine Bicetre Hospital Department of Bacteriology and Virology. From 2008 to 2011 she was Head of the Laboratory and Transfusion Center at Fatsa Devlet Hospital. She subsequently worked as a specialist physician at Anadolu Sağlık Merkezi, at Acıbadem LabMed with responsibility for International Hospital İstanbul, and at SYNLAB İstanbul. Her academic positions include Assistant Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology at Bahçeşehir University (2013–2016), Doctor Faculty Member at İstinye University, where she founded and headed the Microbiota Laboratory and served on the Ethics Committee, and, since 2020, Doctor Faculty Member at İstanbul Medipol University International Faculty of Medicine and Head of Bağcılar Medipol Mega Microbiology Laboratory. She took up her current role in 2022.

Clinical focus

Dr. Yarımçan’s practice is laboratory based. In clinical laboratory medicine and diagnostic microbiology she is involved in the identification of bacteria and viruses from patient samples, work that supports treating physicians in confirming or ruling out infection and in guiding treatment decisions. Her background in bacteriology, virology and molecular biology includes research on Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, enterococci, human bocavirus, HPV and hepatitis A, using methods such as polymerase chain reaction.

She also has specific experience with anaerobic bacteria, gained in the Anaerobic Bacteria Laboratory during her training, and with transfusion center laboratory services from her years as Head of the Laboratory and Transfusion Center at Fatsa Devlet Hospital. Her laboratory leadership roles have included founding a Microbiota Laboratory and heading a hospital microbiology laboratory.

How Dr. Yarımçan works with international patients

Dr. Yarımçan speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, including laboratory and pathology results, MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing results and previous treatments, a clinical examination where relevant and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients.
