Prof. Funda Vesile Çorapcıoğlu, MD

Prof. Funda Vesile Çorapcıoğlu, MD is a pediatric oncology specialist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. Her clinical work concerns the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in children, including Wilms tumor, lymphoma, childhood brain tumors, adenocarcinoma and rare tumors. She has more than 32 years of experience in medicine and is a member of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology, the Turkish Cancer Research and Fight Foundation and the Turkish Pediatric Oncology Group.

Dr. Çorapcıoğlu graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1994. She trained in Pediatric Health and Diseases at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine, completing this training in 1999, and completed her Pediatric Oncology specialization at Dokuz Eylül University in 2001. From 2001 to 2003 she worked as a pediatric oncology specialist at the Dokuz Eylül University Oncology Institute Division of Pediatric Oncology. In 2003 she moved to Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Health and Diseases, where she was the founder and head of the Division of Pediatric Oncology until 2019. During this period she held the positions of assistant professor (2003–2006), associate professor (2006–2011) and professor (2011–2019), and she was a member of the Faculty Board from 2017 to 2019. In 2012 she obtained the Medical Specialization Board certification in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2019.

Clinical focus

Dr. Çorapcıoğlu’s areas of expertise cover several groups of childhood cancers. These include Wilms tumor, a kidney tumor seen mainly in young children; lymphoma, including Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma; childhood brain tumors; adenocarcinoma; and rare tumors of childhood. As a pediatric oncologist, she evaluates children with suspected or confirmed cancer, reviews imaging and pathology findings, and plans and follows medical treatment in coordination with other specialties involved in a child’s care.

Her published work reflects these interests. It includes a single-center study of prognostic factors and treatment results in pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma, case reports on Wilms tumor and on a malignant triton tumor of the trigeminal nerve, and studies on the long-term effects of childhood cancer therapy, such as subclinical anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity in asymptomatic survivors and the effect of treatment on ovarian reserve and pubertal development. She has also co-authored research on post-traumatic stress disorder in mothers of children who have undergone cancer surgery.

How Dr. Çorapcıoğlu works with international patients

Dr. Çorapcıoğlu speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who need them. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be used for an initial review of a child’s case before any decision about traveling is made.
