Prof. Dr. Hatem Hakan Selçuk

Prof. Dr. Hatem Hakan Selçuk is a radiologist whose professional focus is on neuroradiology, interventional radiology and interventional neuroradiology. He provides care in the Radiology unit at Acibadem Maslak Hospital and Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, and he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023. He has more than 31 years in medicine.

Dr. Selçuk graduated from İnönü University Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and completed his radiology training at Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine in 2000. From 2002 to 2005 he completed a fellowship at the İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Department of Neuroradiology. He obtained the European Society of Neuroradiology Neuroradiology Board credential in 2015 and the European Board of Neurointervention (EBNI) certification in 2018. He became an Associate Professor of Radiology in 2012 and a Professor of Radiology in 2020. His clinical experience in neuroradiology includes work at Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital from 2005 to 2009 and at Bakırköy Dr Sadi Konuk Hospital from 2009 to 2022. He is a member of the Turkish Interventional Radiology Association, the Türk Nöroradyoloji Association and the Turkish Radiology Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Selçuk works in diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology, which involves the interpretation of imaging of the brain, spine and head and neck, and in interventional radiology and interventional neuroradiology, which use image guidance to perform minimally invasive procedures on blood vessels and other structures. His area of neurointervention concerns endovascular treatment of conditions affecting the vessels of the brain and its surrounding structures.

His published work reflects these areas. Topics include the use of a clot retriever device for the recanalization of large vessel occlusions in acute ischemic stroke, revascularization of acute basilar artery occlusion, angioplasty and stenting for symptomatic high-grade intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis, endovascular management of superior cerebellar artery aneurysms, and balloon angioplasty for venous sinus stenosis in a case of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. He has also co-authored case reports on internal carotid artery agenesis, carotid artery aneurysm, isolated anterior spinal artery occlusion and other neurological presentations. Whether a particular imaging study or interventional procedure is appropriate depends on an individual assessment of each patient’s condition, imaging findings and overall health.

How Dr. Selçuk works with international patients

Dr. Selçuk speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination where relevant, and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before or instead of traveling.
