Prof. İsmet Aydoğdu, MD

Prof. İsmet Aydoğdu, MD is a hematologist at Acibadem Kent Hospital (Izmir), where he works in the Hematology Department and the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit – Adult. With more than 44 years in medicine, his clinical work covers bone marrow transplantation, chronic myeloid leukemia, lymphoma, bone marrow disorders, anemia, and bleeding disorders such as Von Willebrand disease. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2025.

Dr. Aydoğdu graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1982 and completed his compulsory service as a health center physician in Bolu between 1982 and 1984. He then trained in Internal Medicine at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, completing this in 1990, followed by Hematology training at the same faculty, completed in 1993. In 1994 he was appointed Assistant Associate Professor at İnönü University Faculty of Medicine in Malatya, and from 1994 to 1995 he worked at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Department of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation, in Houston, USA. He became Associate Professor at İnönü University Faculty of Medicine in 1997 and served there as Professor from 2003 to 2007. He was subsequently Professor at Selçuk University Meram Faculty of Medicine in Konya (2007–2011), worked at the Kent Hospital Department of Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation in İzmir (2012–2013), and was Professor at Celal Bayar University Faculty of Medicine in Manisa from 2013 to 2024. He is a member of the Turkish Hematology Association and the Turkish Medical Association İzmir Medical Chamber. His co-authored publications include multicenter studies from Turkey on acquired hemophilia A, ruxolitinib in polycythemia vera, Castleman disease, and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, as well as work on prognostic markers in nodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Clinical focus

Dr. Aydoğdu’s practice centers on bone marrow transplantation in adult patients and on the evaluation and management of bone marrow disorders. His areas of expertise include chronic myeloid leukemia and other forms of leukemia, as well as lymphoma.

He also sees patients with benign hematologic conditions. These include anemia, among them iron deficiency anemia and pernicious anemia, as well as immune thrombocytopenia and the inherited bleeding disorder Von Willebrand disease. The appropriate diagnostic steps and treatment options depend on each patient’s individual findings and are discussed after a clinical assessment.

How Dr. Aydoğdu works with international patients

Dr. Aydoğdu speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments, and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging, laboratory results, and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before or instead of traveling to İzmir.
