Prof. İsmet Tamer, MD

Prof. İsmet Tamer, MD is a Family Medicine specialist practicing at Acibadem Maslak Hospital and Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, with a subspecialty focus on Functional Medicine. Dr. Tamer graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and completed his Family Medicine specialty training at Dr.Lütfi Kırdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital in 2002. He became an Associate Professor of Family Medicine in 2011 (ÜAK – Uludağ University) and a Professor at İstinye University in 2019. His early career included posts as a general practitioner at Ministry of Health Mardin Nusaybin Duruca Health Center and Ministry of Health İstanbul Kartal Hürriyet Mahallesi Health Center, followed by four years as an emergency department physician at Ministry of Health Kartal Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Training and Research Hospital. At the same hospital he later served in the Family Medicine Clinic as resident physician, specialist physician and training officer, and was Physician in Charge of the Büyükada Additional Service Building from 2014 to 2015. He was a visiting faculty member at Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine (2008–2013). At İstinye University he chaired the Department of Family Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and served as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences (2020–2022) and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (2022–2023). He is a founding member and President of the Family Medicine Education and Research Association (AHEAD), a founding member and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Turkish Family Medicine Foundation (TAHEV), and a founding member of the Anti-aging and Healthy Life Academy (ASYA). His memberships also include the Turkish Association of Family Physicians Specialists (TAHUD), the European Academy of Teachers in General Practice/Family Medicine (EURACT) and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). His publications include studies on sarcopenia in patients with diabetes and prediabetes, vitamin D status in obesity and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and gut microbiota in relation to cardiometabolic disease, and he was a collaborator author on trials of liraglutide outcomes in type 2 diabetes.

Clinical focus

Dr. Tamer’s practice centers on the long-term care of adults, including chronic disease management, health management and periodic health check-ups. He works with patients on healthy lifestyle planning and addresses age-related health concerns through geriatric health care, anti-ageing care and longevity applications, applying functional medicine perspectives where appropriate.

He also offers family and marital counselling and performs botulinum toxin applications. The suitability of any assessment or procedure is decided individually after a clinical evaluation.

How Dr. Tamer works with international patients

Dr. Tamer consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, including laboratory results, discharge summaries and previous treatment records, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
