Prof. Mustafa Çetiner, MD

Prof. Mustafa Çetiner, MD is a hematologist in the Hematology Department at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in Istanbul. He has more than 38 years in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2019. His clinical work concentrates on acute and chronic leukemias, anemia, bone marrow diseases, immune thrombocytopenia, and CAR T-cell therapy.

Dr. Çetiner graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1988, completed his Internal Medicine training at Karadeniz Teknik University Faculty of Medicine in 1994, and completed his Hematology training at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 2000. He remained at Marmara University as a specialist physician, assistant professor, and associate professor in internal medicine and hematology, and spent 2004–2005 as a Visiting Faculty Member in the stem cell transplantation program of the Department of Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. From 2008 he worked in the Department of Hematology at V.K.V. Amerikan Hospital, where he was also the physician responsible for therapeutic apheresis until 2017. In 2010 he served as a physician with the WHO (World Health Organization) and UN (United Nations). Between 2010 and 2013 he founded and directed the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at Şişli Memorial Hospital. He became a professor at Koç University Faculty of Medicine in 2013, served as its Internal Medicine Coordinator from 2013 to 2019, and was Founder and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine from 2016 to 2019. His memberships include the European Hematology Association, the American Society of Hematology, the Turkish Hematology Association, the European Bone Marrow Transplantation Registry, the MDS Foundation, and the Turkish Thrombosis and Hemostasis Association. He has co-authored publications on topics including immune thrombocytopenia, iron deficiency anemia, lymphoma, acute myeloid leukemia, and stem cell cryopreservation.

Clinical focus

Dr. Çetiner evaluates and treats patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), as well as other bone marrow diseases. His work also covers CAR T-cell therapy, an area of cellular treatment for selected hematologic malignancies, and Castleman disease.

In non-malignant hematology, he sees patients with anemia, including iron deficiency anemia, immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP). Treatment recommendations depend on the individual diagnosis, disease stage, and the patient’s overall condition, and are discussed with the patient after the relevant findings have been reviewed.
