Mustafa Sungur, MD

Mustafa Sungur, MD is a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery & Traumatology at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Orthopedics & Joint Center. Dr. Sungur graduated from Kadıköy Anadolu High School in 1999 and from Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 2005. During his medical studies he completed a traumatology internship in 2002 at Universtatsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus ,Dresden, Klinik für Unfall und Wiederherstellungschirurgie in Germany, and a general surgery internship in 2003 at Universita degli Studi di Verona, Policlinico G.B. Rossi, Cattedra di Chirurgia Generale in Italy. He completed his specialty training in Orthopedics and Traumatology at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2011. He then worked at Gümüşsuyu Asker Hospital from 2011 to 2012 and at Riza Devlet Hospital from 2012 to 2014, before joining Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2015. He is a member of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Education Council.

Clinical focus

Dr. Sungur’s practice covers a range of orthopedic conditions in children and adults. In pediatric orthopedics he assesses and treats clubfoot (pes equinovarus) and bone cysts in children. In orthopedic oncology his work includes the evaluation and surgical management of bone tumors, sarcomas, and soft-tissue tumors. His foot surgery work includes diabetic foot surgery and Charcot foot surgery, together with chronic wound care and treatment. He also performs hip and knee replacement surgery and uses robotic surgery where it is considered appropriate for the individual patient.

His published work reflects several of these interests. He has co-authored papers on the surgical management of sacral chordoma, on resistance-related proteins and their relation to prognosis and survival in patients with osteosarcoma, on foot deformities and treatment with the Ilizarov method, on neuropathic arthropathy of the shoulder associated with syringomyelia, and on whether obesity affects the functional results of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. Earlier publications from his time as a medical student addressed experimental gastrointestinal research.

How Dr. Sungur works with international patients

Dr. Sungur consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments, and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the options that may be suitable. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case with Dr. Sungur before deciding whether to travel, and any treatment plan is confirmed only after an in-person assessment.
