Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Olcay Çizmeli

Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Olcay Çizmeli is a radiologist at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Radiology unit. His subspecialties are Interventional Neuroradiology and Interventional Radiology, and his areas of expertise include transarterial radioembolization (TARE). With more than 51 years in medicine, his work spans diagnostic imaging and image-guided interventional procedures. He has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2001, the year he joined Acıbadem Kadıköy Hospital.

Dr. Çizmeli graduated from Ted Ankara Koleji in 1975 and from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1981. He worked in the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Radiology from 1982 to 1987 and completed his radiology training there in 1987. From 1987 to 1991 he held a faculty board membership in the Department of Radiology at Gazi Üniv. Faculty of Medicine. He then served as General Director of Sistem Medical Imaging Center (1991–1993), Head of the Radiology Department at Sevgi Hospital (1993–1995) and Medical Director of Sevgi Millennium Hospital (2000–2001). Between 1990 and 1996 he was part of the Türkiye National Delegation to CIRSE. He is a founding member of the Turkish Radiology Association and the Turkish Medical Imaging and Interventional Radiology Association, and a member of the Turkish Interventional Radiology Association, the Türk Nöroradyoloji Association, the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE), the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR) and the American Roentgen Ray Society. He also chairs the Dr. Hatice Özcanlı Medical Imaging and Interventional Radiology Science Award Selection Committee.

Clinical focus

Dr. Çizmeli’s clinical work centers on interventional neuroradiology and interventional radiology, in which procedures are carried out under imaging guidance through small access points rather than open surgery. In interventional neuroradiology, his coauthored publications address the treatment of dural arteriovenous fistula with superselective embolization combined with Gamma Knife radiosurgery, a clinical series of Gamma Knife radiosurgery for arteriovenous malformations, and MR imaging findings in acute ischemic infarction.

In interventional radiology, his areas of expertise include transarterial radioembolization (TARE), a catheter-based treatment delivered through the arteries under imaging guidance. His published work also includes preoperative embolization of a mediastinal paraganglioma, ultrasound-guided aspiration and irrigation of breast abscesses, breast MRI technique, CT coronary angiography in children with Kawasaki disease, and fetal brain development on MRI. Each case is assessed individually, and the suitability of any interventional procedure depends on the patient’s imaging, history and overall condition.

How Dr. Çizmeli works with international patients

Dr. Çizmeli consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
