Accepting international patientsAbout Prof. Dr. Nefise Çağla Tarhan
Prof. Dr. Nefise Çağla Tarhan is a radiologist in the Radiology unit at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in Istanbul. Her areas of expertise are oncologic radiology, musculoskeletal radiology, genitourinary radiology, abdominal radiology and computed tomography. She has worked in medicine for more than 33 years and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2022.
Dr. Tarhan graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1993 and completed her radiology training at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine Radiology in 1998. She then remained at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine Radiology in Ankara, working as a specialist doctor (1998–2001), assistant associate professor (2001–2004), associate professor (2004–2011) and professor (2011–2015). In 2002 she completed a research fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at University of California San Diego in the United States. From 2006 to 2015 she was a member of the Başkent University Gynecological Oncology Working Group, and from 2012 to 2014 she served in the General Secretariat of the Turkish Magnetic Resonance Association. Between 2015 and 2022 she was a professor at TOBB ETÜ Hospital, Department of Radiology in Ankara. She is a member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Turkish Radiology Association, the Turkish Magnetic Resonance Association and the Turkish Medical Association, Istanbul Medical Chamber. Her published work includes studies on multiparametric MRI findings after irreversible electroporation therapy for localized prostate cancer, magnetic resonance imaging of patellofemoral joint pathologies, and MDCT and MR imaging of pancreatic cystic lymphangioma, as well as co-authored articles in gynecological oncology.
Clinical focus
Dr. Tarhan’s work centers on diagnostic imaging in four broad fields. In oncologic radiology, she interprets imaging studies used in the assessment of cancer-related conditions; her publication record includes work on prostate cancer imaging and imaging in gynecological cancers. In musculoskeletal radiology, the field of her 2002 research fellowship, she evaluates imaging of bones, joints and soft tissues, including tendon and joint pathologies such as those of the patellofemoral joint.
Her genitourinary radiology and abdominal radiology practice covers imaging of the urinary tract, the reproductive organs and the abdominal organs, including the pancreas. Across these areas she works with computed tomography as well as magnetic resonance imaging. Radiology reports contribute to the diagnostic picture and are considered together with the clinical findings of the treating physicians; the choice of imaging method and any subsequent treatment depend on the individual case.
How Dr. Tarhan works with international patients
Dr. Tarhan speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their imaging or case before traveling.
