Prof. Nuran Beşe, MD

Prof. Nuran Beşe, MD is a radiation oncologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Radiation Oncology unit. Her clinical interests include cancer care, radiation therapy and breast cancer. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2006 following an academic and clinical career at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Beşe studied medicine at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine between 1982 and 1988. She began her career as a general practitioner at Urfa Social Insurance Institution Hospital in 1989 and at Şişli Social Insurance Institution Hospital from 1989 to 1990. She completed her specialty training in Radiation Oncology at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and remained in the Department of Radiation Oncology there until 2006. She was appointed Associate Professor in 2000 and Professor in 2006. Also in 2006, she served as a consultant to the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiobiology of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency. She is a member of the Gynecological Oncology Association, the Türk Radyasyon Onkolojisi Association and ESTRO (European Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology), and she serves as a board member of the Breast Science Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Beşe’s work centers on radiation therapy as part of cancer care. Radiation therapy may be considered on its own or alongside other treatments, depending on the type and stage of the cancer, the patient’s general health and the recommendations of the wider oncology team. Her role includes reviewing the diagnosis and imaging, assessing whether radiation is an appropriate option, and planning and supervising treatment when it is indicated.

A particular area of interest is breast cancer. Radiation therapy is one of several treatment approaches that may be discussed for patients with breast cancer, and the decision to use it, its timing and its extent are individualized after a review of the pathology, imaging and previous treatments. Dr. Beşe’s board membership of the Breast Science Association and her membership of the Gynecological Oncology Association reflect her professional engagement with oncology beyond the radiation therapy department.

How Dr. Beşe works with international patients

Dr. Beşe consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options that may be appropriate. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before traveling or who need follow-up from abroad.
