Prof. Özge Gümüşay, MD

Prof. Özge Gümüşay, MD is a medical oncologist at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Medical Oncology Department. Her clinical interests are breast cancer and male breast cancer. With more than 21 years in medicine, she provides oncology care with a focus on clear communication and individualised treatment planning.

Dr. Gümüşay graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2005. She completed her Internal Medicine training at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 2010 and her Medical Oncology training at the same faculty in 2014, having worked there as a research assistant in both disciplines from 2006 to 2014. From 2014 to 2019 she was a Medical Oncology Specialist at Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Medicine, where she became an Associate Professor in 2017. Between 2019 and 2021 she gained breast cancer oncology experience at UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in San Francisco, California, and in 2021 she worked at Stanford University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Palo Alto, California. In 2023 she became a Professor at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), The European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the Turkish Medical Oncology Association (TTOD). Her publications include work on CDK4/6 inhibitor resistance in breast cancer, immunotherapy in triple-negative breast cancer, the identification and management of immunotherapy toxicity, liquid biopsy, and percutaneous vertebral augmentation in patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Clinical focus

Dr. Gümüşay’s clinical work centres on breast cancer treatment from a medical oncology perspective. This involves reviewing each patient’s pathology, imaging and previous treatments, considering the individual characteristics of the disease, and discussing the medical oncology options that may be appropriate. Her published research on resistance to targeted therapies and on immunotherapy in breast cancer reflects the areas she follows closely in her clinical practice.

She also has a clinical interest in male breast cancer. Men diagnosed with breast cancer can consult her for assessment of their reports and imaging and for a discussion of the medical oncology options relevant to their situation.

How Dr. Gümüşay works with international patients

Dr. Gümüşay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case with Dr. Gümüşay before travelling or as part of a case review.
