Accepting international patientsAbout Prof. Özlem Aydın, MD
Prof. Özlem Aydın, MD is a pathologist in the Pathology Department at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. Her work centers on medical pathology and clinical cytology, which involve the examination of tissue and cell samples to help treating physicians establish or confirm a diagnosis. As a laboratory-based specialist, her findings are usually conveyed in written reports that clinicians use when planning further investigation or treatment. She has been in medicine for more than 36 years.
Dr. Aydın graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in 1990 and began her career the same year at SSK Erzincan Hospital, followed in 1991 by a post at the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health Adana Maternity and Children’s Care Home. She completed her specialty training in medical pathology at Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1997. Her academic career then developed at Mersin University Faculty of Medicine, where she served as an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology from 1998 to 2003 and as an associate professor from 2003 to 2005. In 2005 she worked as an associate professor in the Department of Clinical Cytology at Karolinska University Hospital. She joined Acibadem Healthcare Services in 2014.
Clinical focus
Dr. Aydın’s areas of expertise are medical pathology and clinical cytology. In medical pathology, tissue samples obtained through biopsy or surgery are processed and examined under the microscope to characterize disease, including the presence, type and extent of tumors or inflammatory changes. In clinical cytology, individual cells or small groups of cells, such as those from smears, body fluids or fine-needle aspirations, are evaluated to identify abnormal or suspicious findings that may guide further diagnostic steps.
Her published work reflects these interests. Titles include a study on atypical cervicovaginal smears in women with a history of intrauterine device use, a paper on the surgical approach to thyroid nodules with suspicious cytology, and case reports on papillary cystadenoma of the submandibular gland, carcinoid tumor of the common bile duct, and an unusual cause of cervical lymphadenopathy. She has also contributed to an experimental study on the pulmonary effects of deltamethrin inhalation and a report on invasive pulmonary aspergillosis after systemic steroid therapy. Dr. Aydın is a member of the International Academy of Cytology, the Turkish Cancer Research and Control Institution, the Sitopatoloji (Cytopathology) Association, the Turkish Pathology Association and the Ankara Pathology Association.
How Dr. Aydın works with international patients
Dr. Aydın communicates in Turkish and English. For patients coming from abroad, the international patient team coordinates the transfer of pathology reports, slides and related documents, arranges appointments and relays questions between the patient, the treating physician and the laboratory. A first consultation or case review typically involves gathering the existing pathology report, any prior biopsy or cytology material, and the clinical history that led to the examination, so that findings can be reviewed in context. Because pathology results are generally interpreted alongside clinical and imaging information, patients are usually advised to discuss the report with their treating physician as well. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss pathological findings remotely.
