Prof. Rezan Topaloğlu, MD

Prof. Rezan Topaloğlu, MD is a pediatric nephrologist with a subspecialty in pediatric rheumatology who sees patients at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. She graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1980 and completed specialty training in pediatrics in the Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatrics between 1980 and 1984. After compulsory service in pediatrics at Samsun State Hospital from 1986 to 1988, she completed her pediatric nephrology training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1991 and obtained the Medical Specialty Board qualification in Pediatric Rheumatology in 2011. She has more than 46 years in medicine.

Dr. Topaloğlu was a faculty member of the Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine, Departments of Pediatric Nephrology and Rheumatology, from 1988 to 2023, progressing from lecturer (1988) to associate professor (1991) and professor (1999). From 2003 to 2012 she served as professor representative on the Faculty Board and Faculty Executive Board and as International Socrates Erasmus Faculty of Medicine Coordinator. Her training abroad included a period at Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Canada (1984–1985); a TUBİTAK NATO scholarship at London Guys and Hammersmith Hospitals, London, England (1994–1995), working on chronic renal failure, transplantation and systemic lupus erythematosus; and work on Bartter Syndrome at NIH, Washington DC, United States of America (1999–2000). She was elected President of ESPN (European Society for Paediatric Nephrology) for 2019–2022 and has chaired the IPNA (International Pediatric Nephrology Association) World Young Nephrologists Education Committee since 2014. She has 341 publications and studies in international journals, cited 7,751 times, with an H-index of 41. Her memberships include IPNA, ESPN, the European Renal Association (ERA), the Pediatric Rheumatology Association, the Pediatric Nephrology Association (ÇND) and the Turkish Nephrology Association (TND). She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023.

Clinical focus

Dr. Topaloğlu evaluates and manages kidney and urinary tract conditions in children. Her areas of expertise include recurrent urinary tract infections in children, urinary incontinence in children, and kidney stone disease in children. She also follows children with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, as well as nephrotic syndrome. Her published work covers topics such as nephrotic syndrome in children, cystinosis, lupus nephritis, primary hyperoxaluria, distal renal tubular acidosis and pediatric kidney transplantation.

Because of her training in both pediatric nephrology and pediatric rheumatology, she is able to assess children whose kidney findings may be related to an underlying rheumatologic or systemic condition, such as lupus, and to coordinate the diagnostic approach accordingly.

How Dr. Topaloğlu works with international patients

Dr. Topaloğlu speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging, laboratory results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their child’s case before or instead of traveling.
