Gamze Gültekin, Dietitian

Gamze Gültekin is a dietitian in the Nutrition & Diet unit at Acibadem Kent Hospital (Izmir) in İzmir. Her professional focus is nutritional assessment and dietetic care, with particular interests in clinical nutrition, enteral and parenteral nutrition, oncology nutrition and geriatric dietetics. She has more than 21 years of experience in the field.

Gamze Gültekin graduated from Erciyes University (Department of Nutrition and Dietetics) in 2005 and completed her postgraduate education in 2008, receiving an Erciyes University Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at the Erciyes University Faculty of Health Sciences. She began her career as a dietitian at Kayseri Private Sevgi Hospital (2005–2009) and then worked as a Specialist Dietitian at Form Ortaca Nutrition Diet Consultancy and Sports Center (2009–2014). In 2015 she joined İzmir Özel Kent Hospital, and in 2016 she continued her work within Acıbadem Healthcare Services. She is a member of KEPAN (Clinical Enteral Parenteral Nutrition Association), Türkiye Diyetisyenler Association, EGEKAD (Aegean Cancer Research Association), IDOD (Interdisciplinary Oncology Association) and GEDİDER (Geriatric Dietetics Association). Her published work includes a prospective cohort study on the use of complementary and alternative medicine in patients with newly diagnosed cancer (J Clin Nutr, 2018) and a study on omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acid enriched total parenteral nutrition in septic patients (Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences, 2014).

Clinical focus

Gamze Gültekin’s practice centers on clinical nutrition, meaning the nutritional assessment and dietary management of patients whose medical conditions or treatments affect their ability to eat, digest or absorb food adequately. This includes enteral nutrition, in which nutrients are delivered through a feeding tube to the digestive tract, and parenteral nutrition, in which nutrients are given intravenously when the digestive tract cannot be used. Planning for these forms of nutritional support typically involves reviewing the patient’s clinical status, laboratory results and treatment goals together with the treating medical team.

Two further areas of her work are oncology nutrition and geriatric dietetics. In oncology nutrition, dietetic care addresses the nutritional needs of patients before, during and after cancer treatment, taking into account factors such as appetite changes, weight loss and treatment side effects. In geriatric dietetics, the focus is on the nutritional requirements of older adults, whose intake and nutritional status may be influenced by chronic conditions, medications and changes in appetite or mobility. In both areas, the dietary plan is individualized and adjusted over time in line with the patient’s condition and the overall treatment plan.

Gamze Gültekin consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports, laboratory results and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s medical history and symptoms, a review of existing test results and previous treatments, a clinical and nutritional assessment, and a discussion of possible dietary options. Video consultations are available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before traveling or to follow up after a visit.
