Selin Berk, MD

Selin Berk, MD is a hematologist with 19 years of experience in medicine. She sees patients in the Hematology Department of Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, Türkiye, where her work covers acute and chronic leukemias, anemia, platelet disorders and other diseases of the blood and bone marrow. Dr. Berk graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2007. She then trained in internal medicine at the same faculty, completing that training in 2013, before specializing in hematology at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, where she completed her hematology training in 2017. In 2021 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services, and she has practiced in İstanbul since then.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. Berk’s practice concerns the leukemias. She evaluates and treats patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). CAR T-cell therapy is also among her areas of expertise, as are bone marrow diseases more broadly. Whether a particular treatment is suitable for an individual patient depends on the specific diagnosis, the findings at the time of assessment and any previous therapy, and this is discussed only after a full evaluation.

Dr. Berk also treats non-malignant blood disorders. These include anemia, including iron deficiency anemia, and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Her expertise further extends to Castleman disease and Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Because symptoms such as tiredness, bruising or bleeding can have many different causes, assessment usually begins with a careful review of blood results and previous reports before a diagnosis is confirmed and the possible approaches to treatment are explained to the patient.

How Dr. Berk works with international patients

Dr. Berk consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports, for example laboratory and pathology results, imaging reports such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound, operative notes and discharge summaries, and it arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, so a patient abroad can speak with Dr. Berk about their situation before deciding whether to travel to İstanbul.
