Seyhan Ördekçi, MD

Seyhan Ördekçi, MD is a Clinical Laboratory specialist at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul. Her areas of expertise include clinical microbiology, laboratory services, transfusion centre practice, blood bank services, infection control and hospital quality management. She has more than 31 years in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023 after a career spent largely in hospital laboratories and administrative roles at training and research hospitals.

Dr. Ördekçi graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1995. After working as a general practitioner at the Elazığ Baskil Aşağı Kuluşağı Health Center from 1996 to 1997, she completed specialty training at the İ.Ü. İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology between 1997 and 2001, qualifying in Medical Microbiology in 2001. From 2002 to 2007 she worked at Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital as Physician Responsible for the Microbiology Laboratory and for the Blood Bank, Chair of the Infection Control Committee, Rapporteur of the Hospital Local Ethics Committee and Hospital Quality Management Representative. Between 2007 and 2014 she was at TEM Hospital as Physician Responsible for the Laboratory and for the Transfusion Center, Hospital Quality Management Director and Hospital Occupational Physician. She returned to Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital as Administrative Officer for Medical Microbiology from 2015 to 2017, and from 2017 to 2023 served as Deputy Chief Physician at the 6th SBÜ İstanbul Mehmet Akif Ersoy Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital.

Clinical focus

Dr. Ördekçi’s work is centred on the hospital laboratory rather than on direct bedside treatment. In clinical microbiology this involves the identification of bacteria and other microorganisms in patient samples and the interpretation of results that inform infection diagnosis and antimicrobial choice. Her responsibilities have also covered general laboratory services, transfusion centre practice and blood bank services, including the handling of blood and blood products, as well as infection control and hospital quality management at an institutional level.

Her published work reflects these interests. Titles include a longitudinal follow-up of quantitative SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike total antibodies in health care professionals, a study of antiphospholipid antibody presence in COVID-19 patients, molecular characterization of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, investigation of the ST131 clone in ESBL-producing Escherichia coli, and a review of blood and blood products transfusion. She is a member of the Turkish Microbiology Society, the Association of Clinical Microbiology Specialists and the Turkish Medical Association.

How Dr. Ördekçi works with international patients

Dr. Ördekçi speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as laboratory and pathology results, MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing results and previous treatments, a clinical examination where relevant and a discussion of the options.
