Prof. Süha Göksel, MD

Prof. Süha Göksel, MD is a pathologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Pathology Department. Her work centers on the diagnostic assessment of tissue and cell samples as part of patient care, with a particular emphasis on gastrointestinal pathology, inflammatory bowel disease and neuroendocrine tumors. She has more than 50 years in medicine and has been with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2009.

Dr. Göksel studied at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine from 1976 to 1982. After graduating, she worked as a general practitioner from 1982 to 1985 before beginning her pathology training as a Research Assistant at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Department of Pathology, where she completed her training in medical pathology in 1988. She continued there as a Specialist Physician from 1988 to 1992, became Assistant Associate Professor in 1992, Associate Professor in 1993 and Professor in 1999. Alongside her clinical and academic duties, she served at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine as a member of the Ethics Committee (1994–2005), the Radiation Commission (1994–2007) and the Faculty Board (1996–1999). Within the Turkish Pathology Association she was a Member of the Board of Directors (1995–1997) and Secretary General of the Board of Directors (1997–1999), and from 1995 to 1999 she was a Full Member of the Coordination Board of Specialty Associations of the Turkish Medical Association and Turkish Pathology Association. She chaired the Board of Directors of the İstanbul Medical Chamber from 2000 to 2002 and in 2007 became a Founding Member of the Ethics Committee of the Federation of Pathology Societies, serving in its 2nd Term. Her memberships include the European Society of Pathology (ESP), the European Crohn and Colitis Organisation (ECCO), the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS), the Turkish Pathology Association, the Federation of Pathology Societies and the İstanbul Medical Chamber.

Clinical focus

Dr. Göksel’s diagnostic work is focused on gastrointestinal pathology. A large part of this involves the microscopic evaluation of biopsy and surgical specimens from the digestive tract in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Pathological assessment in these conditions helps the treating physicians distinguish between the forms of chronic intestinal inflammation and monitor the disease over time.

She also has expertise in the pathology of neuroendocrine tumors. In this area, tissue examination contributes to establishing the diagnosis and characterizing the tumor, which forms part of the information the clinical team uses when discussing treatment options with the patient. As a pathologist, Dr. Göksel works in close cooperation with gastroenterologists, surgeons and oncologists rather than seeing patients for treatment herself.

How Dr. Göksel works with international patients

Dr. Göksel works in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as pathology and laboratory results, MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
