Tuna Yıldırım, MD

Tuna Yıldırım, MD is a general surgeon at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the General Surgery unit. His subspecialty interests are obesity surgery and robotic surgery. Dr. Yıldırım completed secondary education at Kocasinan High School in 1982 and graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1989. He then completed his specialty training in General Surgery at Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital in 1994. Between 1990 and 1991 he worked at the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey Ankara Numune Hospital. From 1995 to 1997 he was a General Surgery Specialist at Beykoz State Hospital, and in 1996 he also held a position in the Department of General Surgery at Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital. In 2005 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services, where he has continued his surgical practice.

Clinical focus

A significant part of Dr. Yıldırım’s work concerns diseases of the breast. He evaluates and treats benign breast conditions and performs breast cancer surgery. The surgical management of each patient depends on the findings of clinical examination, imaging and pathology, and the options are reviewed individually. He also performs thyroid surgery for patients whose thyroid condition requires an operation.

In line with his subspecialty interests, Dr. Yıldırım performs obesity surgery and uses robotic surgery in suitable cases. Whether a patient is a candidate for a bariatric or robotic procedure is decided after an assessment of the individual’s medical history and current condition. His practice further includes repair of umbilical and inguinal hernias and surgery for haemorrhoids. Not every condition requires an operation, and non-surgical options are discussed where they are appropriate.

How Dr. Yıldırım works with international patients

Dr. Yıldırım consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and it arranges appointments and organises the hospital stay. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling, although a final surgical decision usually depends on an in-person examination and up-to-date test results.
