Assoc. Prof. Yeşim Sağlıcan, MD

Assoc. Prof. Yeşim Sağlıcan, MD is a pathology specialist in the Pathology Department at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. Her professional practice is centered on pathology services that support the diagnosis and assessment of disease through the laboratory examination of tissues and cells, including cytology.

Dr. Sağlıcan attended Ted Ankara Koleji from 1970 to 1981 and studied medicine at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine between 1981 and 1988. She completed her specialty training in Medical Pathology at Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital in 1992. She then worked as a pathology specialist at Çankırı State Hospital (1993–1994), S.B.Ankara Oncology Hospital (1994–1998) and S.B.Fethiye State Hospital (1998–2004), followed by a position at Oruç Pathology and Cytology Laboratory (2004–2006). In 2006 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. She is a member of the Ankara Pathology Association, the Anadolu Pathology Association, the Ankara Medical Chamber and the İstanbul Medical Chamber, as well as the TED Ankara Koleji Mezunlar Association, the Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Association and the Ankara Fotoğraf Sanat Klübü.

Clinical focus

Dr. Sağlıcan’s work covers general pathology, tissue examination, cell examination and cytology. In practice, this means the microscopic evaluation of tissue samples and cell preparations obtained through biopsies, surgical procedures or fluid sampling, with the aim of providing a diagnosis or supporting the assessment of a disease process. Pathology findings are one component of a patient’s overall evaluation and are interpreted together with the clinical picture, imaging and other laboratory results by the treating physicians.

Her published work reflects experience in diagnostic pathology across several organ systems. Publications co-authored by Dr. Sağlıcan include reports on a giant leiomyoma of the appendix, a solid and papillary epithelial neoplasm of the pancreas, the association of dendritic cell infiltration with prognostic parameters in gastric carcinoma, secondary tumors of the breast, an arteriovenous malformation of the uterus and a leiomyosarcoma of the rectum with a review of the literature. These appeared in journals including the Turkish Journal of Gastroenterology, Surgery Today and the Journal of Medical Sciences.

How Dr. Sağlıcan works with international patients

Dr. Sağlıcan speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who need them. For international patients, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. In pathology, this may also involve reviewing existing pathology reports or previously prepared slides where these are available. Video consultation is available for international patients, which can be helpful when an initial review of documents is needed before travel is considered.
