Manuka contains methylglyoxal, which shows strong antibacterial activity in lab studies, and sterilized manuka-based dressings have a legitimate role in professional wound care. But swallowed manuka hasn’t been shown to fight infections or outperform ordinary honey for general health, and it carries the same sugar and calories. If you enjoy its distinctive taste, buy it for that — the medical benefits belong to clinical products, not the breakfast table.

How much honey per day is safe?

For most healthy adults, one to two teaspoons a day is a comfortable ceiling if honey is your main added sweetener. The key is the total added-sugar budget: about 25 grams daily for most women and 36 for most men, per the American Heart Association. A single tablespoon of honey uses up 17 of those grams. People with diabetes should count honey as carbohydrate, and infants under one year should have none at all.
