Prof. Ahmet Karaman, MD

Prof. Ahmet Karaman, MD is a gastroenterologist at Acibadem Kayseri Hospital in Kayseri, where he works in the Gastroenterology unit. His clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic, liver and biliary tract diseases, and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, balloon dilation and gastric balloon applications. He has more than 30 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Karaman graduated from Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine in 1996 and worked as a general practitioner at Konya Ereğli Mother and Child Health and Family Planning Center from 1996 to 1998. After a pharmacology residency at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine (1998–1999), he completed Internal Medicine specialty training at the same faculty in 2003 and then worked as an internal medicine specialist at Kayseri SSK Regional Hospital and Kayseri Training and Research Hospital. He undertook gastroenterology subspecialty training at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine Gastroenterology Department (2006–2007) and at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, completing it in 2011. From 2011 to 2013 he worked as a gastroenterology specialist at Kayseri Training and Research Hospital, where he became an associate professor in 2013, the year he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. He is a member of EGEUS (European Group for Endoscopic Ultrasonography), the Turkish Gastroenterology Association Kayseri Branch, the Turkish Medical Association, the Turkish Society of Nephrology and the Turkish Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (TKAD). His published work includes studies on endoscopic treatment of ulcer bleeding, genome instability in patients with ulcerative colitis, and hepatic osteodystrophy in chronic viral liver disease.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Karaman’s practice is inflammatory bowel disease, including the treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He also evaluates and manages pancreatic diseases, liver diseases and biliary tract diseases. Because these conditions may present with overlapping symptoms, assessment usually combines the patient’s history, laboratory findings and imaging before any endoscopic procedure is considered.

On the procedural side, Dr. Karaman performs gastroscopy and colonoscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, ERCP for conditions of the bile ducts and pancreas, and balloon dilation where a narrowing of the digestive tract requires it. His practice also includes the gastric balloon procedure and the swallowable gastric balloon. Whether a given procedure is appropriate depends on the individual patient’s findings and is discussed during consultation.
