Prof. Ali Arıcan, MD

Prof. Ali Arıcan, MD is a Medical Oncology specialist in the Medical Oncology Department of Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul. He graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1987 and completed his training in Internal Medicine (1993) and Medical Oncology (1997) at the same faculty. He has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2015 and has more than 39 years in medicine.

Before 2015, Dr. Arıcan held a series of academic and clinical positions. He worked as a Medical Oncology Specialist at Başkent University Hospital Department of Internal Medicine (1998–1999) and was Founder and Acting Head of the Division of Medical Oncology at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine (1999–2001), holding the titles of Assistant Associate Professor and then Associate Professor. From 2001 to 2007 he was Founder of the Medical Oncology Clinic at Ministry of Health Ankara Etlik İhtisas Hospital. He then served at İnönü University Faculty of Medicine as Founder and Head of the Division of Medical Oncology (2007–2009), Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine (2008–2009). In 2009 he joined Mersin University Faculty of Medicine as Professor and Faculty Member in the Department of Internal Medicine and served as Head of the Division of Medical Oncology. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the European Society for Medical Oncology, a Board Member of the Lymphoma-Myeloma Association, a Founding Member of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Association and a member of the Medical Oncology Group Association, the Türk Akciğer Kanseri Association, the Ankara Breast Diseases Association and the Medical Oncology Association. His co-authored publications include work on the epidemiology of colorectal cancer in Turkey, the management of bone metastasis in breast cancer, HER2 expression in cancers of the pancreas and biliary tree, and the state of clinical trials in oncology in Turkey.

Clinical focus

Dr. Arıcan evaluates and provides medical oncology care for adults with a broad range of solid tumors. His areas of expertise include lung and thoracic cancers, kidney cancer, head and neck cancers, and colorectal cancer, including colon cancer and rectal cancer.

He also sees patients with breast cancer, bladder cancer, stomach cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and testicular cancer. Treatment planning in medical oncology depends on the type and stage of the tumor, previous treatments and the patient’s general health, and is discussed with each patient after a full review.

How Dr. Arıcan works with international patients

Dr. Arıcan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
