Assoc. Prof. Ali Özer, MD

Assoc. Prof. Ali Özer, MD is a physician in the Liver Transplant Center at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Organ Transplantation unit. His clinical work centers on surgery of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract, with additional practice in endocrine surgery and in the treatment of hemorrhoids and anorectal diseases. He has more than 21 years in medicine.

Dr. Özer graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2005 and completed his General Surgery training at Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine in 2013. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2016 and has served as a faculty member at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Vocational School of Health Services since 2017. He is a member of the Turkish Organ Transplantation Association and the Turkish Surgical Association. His published work addresses topics related to liver transplantation, including combined and sequential liver and kidney transplantation from a single living donor in patients with primary hyperoxaluria type 1, predictors of recurrence in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after liver transplantation, liver transplant in patients with portal vein thrombosis, downstaging in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, and the evaluation of reasons for rejecting candidates for living donor liver transplantation.

Clinical focus

Dr. Özer’s areas of expertise include liver cancer, liver failure, fatty liver disease, and pancreatic, liver and biliary tract diseases. He treats gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) as well as gallbladder and bile duct cancers, and his practice includes oncological surgery. Within the Liver Transplant Center, his work is informed by his experience in liver transplantation, reflected in publications on hepatic arterial reconstruction using the right gastroepiploic artery in living donor liver transplantation, predictors of prolonged mechanical ventilation in patients undergoing liver transplantation, and the management of severe portopulmonary hypertension in patients undergoing liver transplantation.

Beyond hepatobiliary surgery, Dr. Özer performs endocrine surgery, including thyroid surgery, and treats inguinal hernia; his publications include a case report of an Amyand hernia presenting as an incarcerated recurrent inguinal hernia. He also manages hemorrhoidal and anorectal diseases. Recommendations depend on the individual assessment of each patient, including the diagnosis, imaging findings and overall health, and not every patient is a candidate for every procedure.

How Dr. Özer works with international patients

Dr. Özer consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, and prior medical records are reviewed as part of any assessment so that the discussion can be based on the patient’s documented findings.
