Prof. Ayşe Sağduyu Kocaman, MD

Prof. Ayşe Sağduyu Kocaman, MD is a neurologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Neurology unit. Her subspecialty areas are headache treatment and dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and aging. She has more than 41 years in medicine and has been part of the Department of Neurology at Acibadem University since 2012.

Dr. Kocaman graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1985. She then worked at Ankara Numune Hospital (1985–1987) and İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital (1987–1988) before joining the Ege University Faculty of Medicine Department of Neurology in 1988, where she completed her neurology training in 1992. From 1991 to 1992 she worked in the United States at the Oregon Health Sciences University Department of Neurology and Neuroimmunology. She became an associate professor at Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and a professor in 2002, and remained with the department until 2011. In 2013 she obtained the Medical Specialty Board qualification in Intensive Care. She is a member of the Turkish Neurology Association, where she belongs to the Multiple Sclerosis, Neuroimmunology, Neuro-Behçet Working Group and is Founding Co-Chair of the Neurological Intensive Care Working Group. Her other memberships include the European Federation of Neurological Society (EFNS), the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN), the Clinical Enteral Parenteral Nutrition Association (KEPAN), the Turkish Cerebrovascular Diseases Association, the İzmir Multipl Skleroz Association, and the İzmir and İstanbul Medical Chambers. Her published work includes studies on multiple sclerosis, botulinum toxin in migraine treatment, optic neuritis, cerebral venous thrombosis and generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. Kocaman’s practice is devoted to headache disorders. She sees patients with migraine, including advanced migraine treatment protocols and biological agents for migraine, and provides headache management with nerve blocks. She also evaluates and treats trigeminal neuralgia and vertigo and balance disorders.

Her second area of focus covers cognitive and age-related neurological conditions, including memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. In addition, she manages neuroimmunological and neuromuscular conditions such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis and other neuromuscular diseases. The suitability of any specific treatment is determined individually after clinical assessment.

How Dr. Kocaman works with international patients

Dr. Kocaman consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages.
