Prof. Aziz Sümer, MD

Prof. Aziz Sümer, MD is a General Surgery specialist at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital in Istanbul, where he works within the Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery and General Surgery units. He graduated from Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine in 1997 and completed his General Surgery training at Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital in 2005. He was appointed Doç. Dr. in 2012 and Prof. Dr. in 2017, and he has more than 29 years in medicine. In 2009 he served as Assistant Professor at the Department of General Surgery, Yüzüncü Yil University Faculty of Medicine, and worked at the Obesity Surgery Clinic at Bezmialem University Faculty of Medicine.

His further training has covered endocrine, advanced laparoscopic, bariatric, robotic and transplantation surgery. In 2005 he trained with Prof. Dr. Bruno Niederle at the Endocrine Surgery Clinic of Viyana University Faculty of Medicine, Austria (Medizinische Universitat Wien, Section of Endocrine Surgery, Division of General Surgery, Department of Surgery) AKH Hospital. In 2009 and 2010 he completed endocrine, advanced laparoscopic, single-incision laparoscopic and bariatric surgery training at the E Service, Department of General Surgery, İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, and advanced laparoscopic and morbid obesity surgery training at the 2nd General Surgery Clinic of Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital. He worked with Prof. Dr. Roberto Tacchino at The Unit of Surgery, Universita Cattolica Del Sacro Cuore in Rome, with Prof. Dr. Pal Ondrejka at the 2nd Surgery Clinic of Semmehveis University in Hungary, and in 2011 with Prof. Dr. Salvador Morales Conde at The Unit of Innovation in Minimally Invasive Surgery University Hospital Virgen del Rocıo in Spain. At the IRCAD-EITS center in Strasbourg, France, he completed the Da-Vinci® Surgical System Off-Site Training Program for a Console Surgeon in 2011 and the Minimally Invasive Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery advanced courses in 2014 and 2015. He also completed kidney transplantation training at the Organ Transplantation Center of Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine (2012–2013) and liver-kidney transplantation training with Prof.Dr. Ayhan Dinçkan at the Organ Transplantation Center of İstinye University Bahçeşehir Liv Hospital (2018–2022).

Clinical focus

Dr. Sümer’s clinical work centers on bariatric surgery and the surgical management of obesity, as well as endocrine surgery and the treatment of thyroid disorders. He also treats pancreatic, liver and biliary tract diseases.

His areas of expertise further include inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and the treatment of hemorrhoids and other anorectal conditions. The choice of treatment in each case depends on the individual patient’s diagnosis, general health and previous treatment.

How Dr. Sümer works with international patients

Dr. Sümer consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options.
