Başak Kumbasar, MD

Başak Kumbasar, MD is a radiologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Radiology unit. Her professional interests are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tomography. During this period, between 2001 and 2002, she completed a visiting fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, Department of Radiology. From 2003 to 2008 she worked in the VKV Amerikan Hospital Department of Radiology, and in 2008 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. Her published work includes articles on the imaging of neuroendocrine tumors comparing helical CT with SRS, the radiologic diagnosis and staging of carcinoma of the esophagus, MR imaging of left ventricular true aneurysm and myocardial viability, and interventional radiology in inflammatory pancreatic disease.

Dr. Kumbasar’s clinical work centers on two cross-sectional imaging methods: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tomography. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of soft tissues, organs and blood vessels without ionizing radiation. Tomography produces cross-sectional images of the body and is used to assess a wide range of conditions across different organ systems. In both cases, the radiologist’s role is to plan the appropriate examination, review the acquired images and prepare a written report that the referring physician uses together with the patient’s history, examination and other test results.

How Dr. Kumbasar works with international patients

Dr. Kumbasar consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, which in radiology may include whether a new or repeat examination is appropriate. Video consultation is available for international patients, which can be useful for reviewing existing images and reports before deciding whether travel for further imaging is needed.
