Prof. Burak Akan, MD

Prof. Burak Akan, MD is a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery & Traumatology who sees patients at Acibadem Ankara Hospital in Ankara and Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. Dr. Akan graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2001 and completed his specialty training in orthopedics and traumatology at the same faculty in 2007, having worked as a research assistant at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology from 2002 to 2007. He then served as a specialist doctor at Gölbaşı Hasvak State Hospital in Ankara between 2007 and 2009. From 2009 he worked at Ufuk University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, where he became an Associate Professor in 2013 and was appointed Professor in 2019. Between 2014 and 2021 he practiced at Özel Koru Ankara Hospital, and from 2014 to 2023 he also ran a private practice. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023. He is a member of the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Association (TOTBİD), the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT), the Turkish Sports Injuries, Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery Association (TUSYAD), the European Society of Sports Traumatogy Knee Surgery &Artroscopy (ESSKA), and the Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Association, among others.

Clinical focus

Dr. Akan’s main area of work is joint replacement of the hip and knee. This includes hip replacement and knee replacement surgery for patients with advanced joint disease, as well as the assessment of patients who may need revision of an existing knee prosthesis. His published work includes studies on cemented versus uncemented Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, outcomes for revision total knee replacement after unicompartmental knee replacement, cementless total hip arthroplasty in developmental dysplasia of the hip with end-stage osteoarthritis, and two-stage revision total knee arthroplasty for infected total knee arthroplasty.

A second focus is sports traumatology and sports medicine. Dr. Akan evaluates and treats meniscus tears, knee injuries and other joint injuries, including those sustained during sport. Which treatment is appropriate depends on the individual patient, the findings on examination and imaging, and the goals of the patient, and this is discussed on a case-by-case basis.

How Dr. Akan works with international patients

Dr. Akan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options.
