Prof. Burak Tander, MD

Prof. Burak Tander, MD is a pediatric surgeon at Acibadem Atakent Hospital and Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Pediatric Surgery unit. His subspecialty is digestive system diseases and surgery in children, and he has more than 42 years in medicine. He speaks Turkish and English.

Dr. Tander graduated from İstanbul Erkek High School in 1984 and from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1990. His education also includes periods at Bern University in 1987 and at Eppendorf University, Hamburg, Germany in 1994. He completed his pediatric surgery training at Şişli Etfal Training and Research Hospital in 1997. He then worked at GATA, Department of Pediatric Surgery from 1997 to 1998 and at the Şişli Etfal Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Surgery Clinic from 1998 to 2001. From 2001 to 2014 he was a faculty member of Ondokuz Mayıs University, Department of Pediatric Surgery, and from 2014 to 2017 he served as its Department Chair. Between 2006 and 2007 he worked at Wayne State University in Detroit. In 2017 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services and became Secretary General of the Turkish Pediatric Surgery Association. He is a member of the British Pediatric Endoscopic Surgery Association, the European Pediatric Surgery Association, the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, the International Pediatric Endoscopy Group, the Turkish Pediatric Surgery Association and the European Pediatric Endoscopic Surgery Association. His published work includes studies on transanal endorectal pull-through for Hirschsprung’s disease, thoracoscopic management of empyema thoracis in children, Cajal cells in small bowel atresia, peritoneal drains in perforated appendicitis and congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Clinical focus

Dr. Tander’s clinical work covers a range of common and complex conditions in pediatric surgery. In the genital and inguinal region, he treats undescended testicle, hydrocele, spermatic cord cyst, pediatric hernia and pediatric umbilical hernia, and he performs circumcision. He also manages labial adhesions in girls and torticollis in infants and children.

Within his subspecialty of pediatric digestive system surgery, his practice includes pediatric appendicitis and Hirschsprung disease. The choice of approach for each child depends on the diagnosis, the child’s age and general condition, and the findings of the clinical assessment.

How Dr. Tander works with international patients

Dr. Tander consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who speak other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as ultrasound, X-ray, MRI or CT reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
