Burcu Mert, MD

Burcu Mert, MD is an anesthesiology specialist who works in the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. Clinical focus

The core of Dr. Mert’s work is anesthesia management. This covers the assessment of a patient before a procedure, the planning of an anesthetic approach that takes the patient’s history and current condition into account, the administration and monitoring of anesthesia during the procedure, and the follow-up of the patient as the effects of anesthesia wear off. Because the anesthetic plan is closely tied to the surgical or diagnostic procedure and to the patient’s overall health, this planning is carried out in coordination with the treating team. Patients with existing medical conditions, allergies or regular medication are asked to share this information, as it can influence how anesthesia is planned. Patients are also informed about what to expect before and after anesthesia so that they can prepare for the procedure.

Her second area of focus is reanimation, which refers to the care of patients whose vital functions need support or restoration. In this setting the anesthesiologist monitors breathing, circulation and other vital parameters and responds to changes as they occur. As with anesthesia management, the approach is adapted to the individual patient, and Dr. Mert works alongside the other specialists involved in the patient’s care.

How Dr. Mert works with international patients

Dr. Mert consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, including how anesthesia may be planned for a proposed procedure.
