Can Turan, MD is an Intensive Care specialist at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit. He completed his Intensive Care training at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 2017 and subsequently worked at S.B.Ü. Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital. He is listed as a participant in the DecubICUs study, a multicenter investigation of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients published in Intensive Care Med in 2021, and he is a co-author of a 2007 paper in Optometry and Visual Science on refractive errors among medical students in Turkey.

Clinical focus

Dr. Turan’s clinical work centers on the care of critically ill adults in the intensive care unit. His areas of expertise include intensive care treatment, the recognition and management of sepsis, mechanical ventilation, and advanced life support. Patients admitted to intensive care often have several organ systems affected at the same time, and their management involves close monitoring, respiratory support where needed, treatment of infection, and coordination with the other specialties involved in the patient’s care.

Palliative care is also part of his practice. In the intensive care setting this involves attention to symptom control, communication with patients and their families, and planning of care that is appropriate to the patient’s condition and wishes. The approach taken in each case depends on the individual clinical picture, and treatment decisions are made after assessment of the patient’s history, current findings and previous treatment.

How Dr. Turan works with international patients

Dr. Turan speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be used for an initial review of records or for follow-up discussion, depending on the patient’s situation.
