Prof. Deniz Konya, MD

Prof. Deniz Konya, MD is a neurosurgeon with more than 32 years of experience in medicine. He works in the Neurosurgery unit at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, Türkiye, where his clinical practice centers on disorders of the spine and spinal cord. These include degenerative conditions such as lumbar disc herniation, cervical disc herniation and spinal canal stenosis, deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis, as well as spinal tumors, spinal infections, spinal cord injuries and congenital spinal disorders.

Dr. Konya graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1994, and in 2002 he trained at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery. In 2010 he was appointed Assistant Associate Professor at Marmara University, and in 2015 he became Associate Professor at the same university; also in 2015 he was appointed Professor at Bahçeşehir University. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2026. He received the TÜBİTAK Research Award for contributions to neurosurgery and spinal research and has given lectures as an invited speaker at 58 international and national meetings. His written work includes 82 publications in international journals, 26 publications in national journals, 37 papers presented in international congresses and 101 papers presented in national congresses, together with 3 chapters in international books and 6 chapters in national books. He is a member of the Turkish Spine Association, AOSpine, AOSpine Turkey Neuro Council, Türk Nöroşirurji Association, North American Spine Society (NASS), Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and European Spine Society.

Clinical focus

Dr. Konya’s clinical work is dedicated to spinal neurosurgery. He evaluates and treats patients with lumbar disc herniation, cervical disc herniation and spinal canal stenosis, conditions in which nerve compression may cause pain, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs. He also manages spinal deformities, including scoliosis and kyphosis, and treats spinal tumors, spinal infections and spinal cord injuries. Congenital spinal disorders are a further part of his practice.

Among the procedures he performs are kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty, minimally invasive techniques used in selected cases of vertebral fractures, and spinal cord stimulation, which may be considered for certain types of persistent pain. Whether a given procedure is appropriate depends on the individual patient’s diagnosis, imaging findings and overall condition, and this is assessed during a personal consultation.

How Dr. Konya works with international patients

Dr. Konya speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients, so a patient abroad can speak with Dr. Konya before deciding whether to travel for further evaluation or treatment.
