Prof. Enis Özyar, MD

Prof. Enis Özyar, MD is a radiation oncologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Radiation Oncology unit. He has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2008 and has more than 47 years in medicine. His clinical work centers on radiotherapy for patients with cancer, including head and neck cancers, brain tumors, breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as brachytherapy.

Dr. Özyar studied at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine from 1979 to 1985. Between 1985 and 1987 he worked at the İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation and completed compulsory service with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in Ankara. He completed his Radiation Oncology training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1993 and worked in the Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Radyasyon Onkolojisi Department from 1987 to 2008, becoming an Associate Professor in 1997 and a Professor in 2003. He is a member of the Radyasyon Onkolojisi Association, the Turkish Cancer Research and Fight Association, the Turkish Oncology Association, the Hacettepe Oncology Institute Association, the Oncology Institute Foundation, the Balkan Union of Oncology, the European Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. His published work includes studies on nasopharyngeal carcinoma, among them tumor volume as a prognostic factor and treatment of pediatric and young adult patients, as well as papers on primary thyroid lymphoma and childhood Hodgkin lymphoma.

Clinical focus

Dr. Özyar evaluates and plans radiotherapy for a range of cancers. A significant part of his work involves head and neck cancers, an area reflected in his publications on nasopharyngeal carcinoma. He also treats patients with brain tumors, breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancers, and his expertise includes brachytherapy, in which a radiation source is placed close to or within the tumor.

Radiation treatment is planned individually. The choice of technique, dose and schedule depends on the type and stage of the cancer, the patient’s general condition and any previous surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Radiotherapy may be used alone or alongside other treatments, and Dr. Özyar’s role includes assessing whether radiation is appropriate and, if so, how it fits into the overall care plan.

How Dr. Özyar works with international patients

Dr. Özyar speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before traveling, or when an in-person visit is not immediately possible.
