Prof. Ercan Karaarslan, MD

Prof. Ercan Karaarslan, MD is a radiologist in the Radiology unit at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. He graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1991 and completed his radiology training at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1996. In 2010 he was appointed Professor at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine. He has worked in medicine for more than 35 years.

His professional experience began at Radyomar, MRI Imaging Center, where he worked from 1995 to 1997, followed by the MRI Department of İntermed Medical Center from 1997 to 2002. He then worked at Amerikan Hospital from 2002 to 2007 and joined Acibadem Healthcare Services in 2008. During this period he also spent time abroad as a visiting physician, at the University of Michigan in 2002 and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in 2008. He is a member of the Turkish Radiology Association, the Türk Manyetik Rözanans Association, the Türk Nöroradyoloji Association, the European Society of Radiology and the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology.

Clinical focus

Dr. Karaarslan’s clinical work centers on diagnostic imaging. His areas of expertise include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and tomography. Within CT, he has a particular interest in CT colonography, also referred to as virtual colonoscopy, and in virtual angiography, both of which are cross-sectional imaging examinations used for diagnostic evaluation. His published work reflects these interests and includes papers on diffusion-weighted MR imaging in non-infarct lesions of the brain, imaging in migraine with aura, CT and MRI findings in orbital varix, CT findings in epiploic appendagitis, and imaging findings following spinal and cranial surgery.

Imaging results are interpreted in the context of the patient’s history and the clinical question raised by the referring physician, and findings are reported so that they can be used by the treating team. General information on coronary CT angiography and PET-CT imaging is available on this site.

How Dr. Karaarslan works with international patients

Dr. Karaarslan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The hospital’s international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, including which imaging examinations, if any, may be appropriate. Video consultation is available for international patients, which can be used to review existing imaging and discuss whether further examinations in İstanbul are advisable.
