Asst. Prof. Erkan Acar, MD

Asst. Prof. Erkan Acar, MD is a neurologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Neurology unit. His work spans three main areas: headache treatment, stroke and preventive treatments, and dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and aging. He has more than 16 years of experience in medicine and sees both adult patients with acute neurological complaints and those living with long-term or age-related neurological conditions.

Dr. Acar graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2010. He then completed his specialty training in neurology at Ord. Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Diseases Training and Research Hospital, finishing in 2015. In the same year he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services, where he has worked since.

Clinical focus

A significant part of Dr. Acar’s practice is dedicated to headache disorders. He evaluates and treats patients with migraine, including the use of biological treatments for migraine where appropriate, and he performs nerve blocks as part of headache management. He also assesses patients with trigeminal neuralgia, a facial pain condition that requires careful differentiation from other causes of head and facial pain. In the field of cerebrovascular disease, his focus is on stroke prevention, which involves identifying risk factors and planning preventive treatment.

Dr. Acar also cares for patients with neurodegenerative and movement-related conditions. He assesses memory loss and provides diagnosis and care planning for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. His practice further includes multiple sclerosis and aging-related neurological care, in which the management plan takes into account the patient’s overall health, coexisting conditions and daily functioning. Treatment recommendations are made on an individual basis after a clinical assessment and review of the available findings.

How Dr. Acar works with international patients

Dr. Acar consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and current symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical neurological examination and a discussion of the possible options. Where a patient is not yet able to travel, or wishes to discuss findings after a visit, video consultation for international patients is available. In many cases, further tests or a period of follow-up may be needed before a treatment plan can be finalized, and Dr. Acar discusses this with the patient during the consultation.
