Prof. Ethem Kumbay, MD

Prof. Ethem Kumbay, MD is a cardiologist in the Cardiology Department at Acibadem Bursa Hospital in Bursa. He has spent more than 51 years in medicine, with a background in both internal medicine and cardiology. His clinical work covers ischemic heart disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and hypotension, atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, aortic valve stenosis, and angiography.

Dr. Kumbay graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1975. He completed his training in Internal Medicine at Gülhane Military Medical Academy in 1982 and in Cardiology at Gülhane Military Medical Academy in 1987. From 1982 to 1985 he was Head of the Internal Medicine Clinic at İzmit Derince Research Hospital, and from 1987 to 1993 he was Head of the Cardiology Clinic at GATA Faculty of Medicine Haydarpaşa Training Hospital. He served as a Faculty Member in the Department of Cardiology at Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine from 1993 to 1997 and again from 1999 to 2011, and he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2009. He is a member of the Turkish Cardiology Association and the European Cardiology Association. His co-authored publications include work on the relationship between small arterial elasticity, serum uric acid and the extent of coronary artery disease, primary congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries, cardiac involvement in Behçet’s disease, lipoprotein(a) and other lipid parameters, and apolipoprotein isomorphism in atherosclerotic patients and their families.

Clinical focus

Dr. Kumbay assesses and manages patients with ischemic heart disease, including those who may require angiography to evaluate the coronary arteries. He also cares for patients with hyperlipidemia and with hypertension, as well as patients with hypotension. These conditions are frequently interrelated, and his experience in internal medicine informs how he approaches the overall cardiovascular risk of each patient.

A further part of his practice concerns rhythm disorders, in particular atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, and structural valve disease such as aortic valve stenosis. The suitability of any diagnostic test or treatment depends on the individual patient’s history, examination findings and existing results, and is decided after clinical assessment.

How Dr. Kumbay works with international patients

Dr. Kumbay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages.
