Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Kılıç

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Kılıç is a radiologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. He works in the hospital’s Radiology unit, where his professional interests are breast diseases, mammography and ultrasonographic imaging. He has more than 22 years in medicine and provides radiology assessment to patients from Turkey and from abroad, with a particular emphasis on breast imaging and ultrasound-based diagnostic evaluation.

Dr. Kılıç graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2004. He then completed his specialty training in radiology at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2010. He has been working with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2016 and holds the academic title of associate professor.

Clinical focus

The central area of Dr. Kılıç’s practice is the imaging of breast diseases. Breast imaging is used to look for and characterize changes in breast tissue, to help distinguish findings that need further attention from those that do not, and to follow known conditions over time. Because the appearance of breast tissue varies from person to person, the imaging approach is adapted to the individual patient, taking into account her history, symptoms and any previous examinations.

Two imaging methods are at the core of his work. Mammography is an X-ray based examination of the breast that is used both in screening and in the assessment of specific symptoms or findings. Ultrasonographic imaging uses sound waves rather than radiation and is frequently used alongside mammography to examine a palpable finding, to look more closely at an area seen on a mammogram, or to evaluate breast tissue in situations where ultrasound is the more suitable first method. In each case the radiologist interprets the images, compares them with earlier studies where available, and prepares a report for the referring physician so that the next step, if one is needed, can be discussed with the patient.

How Dr. Kılıç works with international patients

Dr. Kılıç consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as previous mammography and ultrasound reports, MRI or CT studies, laboratory and pathology results, and any operative notes or discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination where appropriate, and a discussion of the options that follow from the findings. For patients who are not yet in İstanbul, a video consultation is available so that existing imaging and reports can be discussed before any decision about travel is made.
