Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih Aygün

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih Aygün is a pediatric intensive care specialist at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, with more than 23 years in medicine. He graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2003, completed his pediatrics training at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2010, and completed his pediatric intensive care subspecialty training at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2016. His subspecialty period included work as a research assistant in neonatology at Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine (2010–2012), and in pediatric intensive care at Bezmi-Âlem Vakıf University (2013–2014) and İstanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine (2014–2016).

After completing his training, Dr. Aygün worked as a subspecialist at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal E.A.H. and Okmeydanı E.A.H. (2016–2018), and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2016. From 2018 to 2024 he served as Head of the Department of Pediatric Intensive Care at İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, first as a Doctor Faculty Member (2018–2020) and then as Associate Professor (2020–2024). He is a co-author of publications in journals including Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Research, Journal of Clinical Apheresis, and The Journal of Clinical Investigation, on topics such as mechanical ventilation and weaning practice in Turkish pediatric intensive care units, continuous renal replacement therapy and therapeutic plasma exchange in children with severe sepsis or septic shock, biomarkers of COVID-19 in children, and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

Clinical focus

Dr. Aygün’s clinical work centers on the care of critically ill infants and children. His areas of expertise include respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), respiratory failure, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). He also manages sepsis and multiple organ failure in the pediatric intensive care setting, and provides advanced life support in children.

His interests further include the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric infectious diseases, the evaluation of febrile seizures, and lactose intolerance in infants. Treatment decisions in these conditions depend on the individual child’s clinical picture and are made after a full assessment.

How Dr. Aygün works with international patients

Dr. Aygün consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss a case before traveling.
