Clinical focus
Dr. Kahveci’s areas of expertise are intensive care treatment, advanced life support and palliative care. Intensive care treatment concerns the monitoring and support of critically ill patients whose organ functions are threatened or failing. Advanced life support refers to the structured resuscitation and stabilization of patients in life-threatening situations. Palliative care focuses on relieving symptoms and supporting comfort in patients with serious illness. The appropriate approach in each case depends on the individual patient’s condition and is decided after clinical assessment.
Her published work reflects these interests. She has co-authored studies on the epidemiology of sepsis in intensive care units in Turkey, prognostic risk factors in ventilator-associated pneumonia, comparison of blood culture and multiplex real-time PCR for the diagnosis of nosocomial sepsis, ventilation practice and outcomes in patients at risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome across 16 countries, nosocomial Acinetobacter pneumonia, nosocomial diarrhea in critically ill adults, and critically ill patients infected with H1N1 influenza A virus during the 2009–2010 pandemic. She is a member of the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, the Turkish Intensive Care Society, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the Clinical Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Society, the Clinical Toxicology Society, the European Society of Enteral Parenteral Nutrition, the Resüsitasyon Association and the Turkish Medical Association Bursa Medical Chamber.
How Dr. Kahveci works with international patients
Dr. Kahveci consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
