Prof. Gül Esen İçten, MD

Prof. Gül Esen İçten, MD is a radiologist in the Radiology unit of Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. Her clinical work centers on the imaging evaluation of breast diseases, with a particular focus on mammography and ultrasound imaging. She has more than 42 years in medicine and holds the academic title of Professor.

Dr. İçten studied at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine from 1984 to 1991 and completed her radiology specialty training at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine between 1991 and 1995. She then joined the İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Radiology Department in 1995, became an Associate Professor in 1999 and was appointed Professor in 2005 at the same institution. In 2007 she worked at Mamomed Breast Diseases Diagnosis Center, and in 2010 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. She is a member of the Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA), the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the European Society for Breast Imaging (EUSOBI), the Turkish Radiology Association, the Senoloji Association, the Turkish Federation of Breast Diseases and the Ultrasonografi Association. Her published work includes articles on ultrasonography of the postsurgical breast including implants, gray-scale and power Doppler ultrasound in the preoperative evaluation of axillary metastases in breast cancer, the comparison of magnetic resonance imaging and scintimammography findings in breast lesions, and mammographic density changes in women receiving different hormone regimens.

Clinical focus

Dr. İçten’s practice is dedicated to diagnostic breast imaging. She evaluates patients with breast diseases using mammography and ultrasound imaging, interpreting findings in the context of the patient’s history, symptoms and any earlier examinations. Her published research reflects the same areas, including ultrasound assessment of the breast after surgery and in the presence of implants, the use of ultrasound and MR imaging in detecting local chest wall recurrence after mastectomy, and the imaging of axillary lymph nodes in patients with breast cancer.

Radiological findings are one component of the diagnostic process. Where a breast lesion or other change is identified, the interpretation and any further steps are discussed with the patient and, where appropriate, with the treating clinicians, so that imaging results can be considered alongside clinical and pathological information.

How Dr. İçten works with international patients

Dr. İçten consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as mammography, ultrasound or MRI reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their imaging findings or questions before or instead of traveling.
