Prof. Hakan Ağır, MD

Prof. Hakan Ağır, MD is a plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon in the Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery unit at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 41 years in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2020. His clinical work covers cleft lip and palate treatment, maxillofacial surgery, surgery for congenital structural anomalies, oral cancer surgery, breast reduction and augmentation, rhinoplasty and non-surgical eyelid aesthetics.

Dr. Ağır graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1991 and completed his specialty training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine between 1991 and 1997, with a period in 1996 at the Denmark Copenhagen University Rigshospital Department of Plastic Surgery. After service at Diyarbakır Military Hospital, he held academic posts at Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine, where he became Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2015. His advanced training included craniomaxillofacial surgery as a fellow at the Australia Adelaide Craniofacial Center (2000–2001), plastic and maxillofacial surgery as a fellow in Wellington, New Zealand (2004–2005), and cleft lip and palate and maxillofacial surgery at Taiwan Chang Gung Hospital (2005). He later worked as a consultant in plastic and maxillofacial surgery in Hamilton and Wellington, New Zealand (2011–2012), and in 2012 received equivalency from the New Zealand Medical Council to practice as a plastic surgeon in that country. He passed the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Examination (FEBOPRAS) in 2009, holds Turkish Plastic Surgery Association Proficiency (2007 and 2016), and was recognized by the Medical Specialization Board in Oral, Facial and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2012–2013. He is a member of societies including the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, the Asia-Pacific Cleft / Craniofacial Society, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the Turkish Reconstructive Microsurgery Association, and has published on topics such as cleft palate repair, mandibular fracture healing and free flap reconstruction in journals including the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery and the Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. Ağır’s practice is reconstructive surgery, including cleft lip and palate treatment, surgery for congenital structural anomalies and oral and maxillofacial surgery. He also performs oral cancer surgery, where reconstruction of the affected region may be part of the treatment plan.

His aesthetic work includes rhinoplasty, breast reduction and breast augmentation, as well as non-surgical eyelid aesthetics. Whether a surgical or non-surgical approach is suitable depends on the individual patient’s anatomy, medical history and goals, and is discussed during consultation.

How Dr. Ağır works with international patients

Dr. Ağır consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options.
