Hüseyin Maçika, MD

Hüseyin Maçika, MD is an anesthesiologist in the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 39 years in medicine, and his clinical work centers on anesthesiology and reanimation, with particular experience in perioperative anesthesia care and in anesthesia for chest surgery and cardiovascular surgery. He has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2006.

Dr. Maçika graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1987. He began his professional career at Batman SSK Hospital, where he worked from 1987 to 1989, and then practiced at İzmir Tepecik SSK Hospital from 1989 to 1992. From 1993 to 2006 he worked at the Prof.Dr.Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Anesthesia Clinic, and in 1997 he completed his specialty training at the Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation. He is a member of the Society of Chest Cardiovascular Anesthesia.

Clinical focus

Dr. Maçika’s practice covers the full course of perioperative anesthesia care: assessing patients before an operation, administering and monitoring anesthesia during surgery, and supporting recovery afterward. His background is in anesthesia for chest surgery and cardiovascular surgery, settings in which patients often have significant heart or lung conditions and in which anesthetic management must be closely coordinated with the surgical team. Reanimation, the care of patients whose vital functions need support, is also part of his work.

His published work reflects these clinical interests. Topics include premedication in coronary artery bypass surgery, the effects of sevoflurane on hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction during one-lung ventilation in thoracic surgery, the effects of magnesium sulphate on arrhythmia after coronary artery bypass grafting, a comparison of general anesthesia, cervical plexus blockade and cervical epidural anesthesia for carotid endarterectomy, pulse oximetry monitoring of lower extremity circulation in vascular surgery, topical anesthetic-induced methemoglobinemia after bronchoscopy, and case reports on massive air embolism at the initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass and on adult respiratory distress after streptokinase administration. Several of these papers appeared in the British Journal of Anaesthesia.

How Dr. Maçika works with international patients

Dr. Maçika speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit itself. For a patient scheduled for surgery, a first consultation with the anesthesiology team typically covers the patient’s medical history and current symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the anesthetic options and what to expect before, during and after the procedure.
